A&O Reviews

this review is about City Of Dub
"Any self-respecting UK dub fan will immediately check this sound as emanating from the twin towers of A&O - a pounding bass that just won't stop thumping you in the chest while a melodica flutters around somewhere over your head. This time Christine and John come with a mainly showcase set, dub after the vocal, featuring a host of roots talent. Coz Tafari’s “Marching Warriors” is a globalised update of Aswad’s anthemic “Warrior Charge” with John’s melodica replacing the martial horns.
Regular collaborator Jonah Dan pops up twice, first on the set’s toughest track, “Nah Lef The Truth”, a meditation on keeping on the straight and narrow housed in a monstrous full-on steppers lurch, then on the more reflective “This Is My Prayer”. Among the many others here are old friends Nishka and Gregory Fabulous, key voices of new roots consciousness in the UK."

"Enter a path few can follow, but many can appreciate. A studio or sound's dub-plates are like a Shaolin monk's sacred teachings. London-based Alpha & Omega take us into their world of mesmerising roots and divulge their exclusive 'specials' on this album"
MUZIK

"Alpha And Omega have been making some of the most spiritually charged roots reggae of the contemporary heavyweight UK dub persuasion"
NME

"Premier Brit dub with a spooky Coptic ambience from the respected Christine / John partnership. Best enjoyed at sound system volumes accompanied by the herb that is not basil"
Q MAGAZINE

"Start anywhere on the board with A&O - the quality of their output remains undiminished"
STEVE BARKER WIRE

"Dub Plate Selection Vol. 1 comes as a timely reminder that throughout the decade no-one has done more to breathe life into roots dub than Alpha and Omega."
TIME OUT

"Alpha And Omega are clearly on to something, the compelling presences at the heart of these airy sonic worlds have a harder darker edge than some of their ancestors."
THE WIRE

"Alpha And Omega, the leaders in the UK's dub scene are gaining the respect of critics, contemporaries and public alike with their spiritually charged, bass-heavy modern-day rockers"
GREENSLEEVES

"Heavy dub sound system inna your own living room! Exclusive dub-plates epitomise Alpha & Omega's inimitable rolling, rumbling bass lines and classic UK roots style. All are mashed up in true dub style with plenty of spacey echoes and FX, sirens, skanks and squirly sounds. No home or chill-out room should be without one!'
WAX

"Pure listening pleasure for lovers of thick, languid and intentionally intense international dub"
THE BEAT

"There is a certain playfulness-a lightness-in the reverb and echo that pushes back the darkness and bleakness, relying on the haunting distortion of their vocals, they serve up twelve smooth dub plate delights. Their dub infection is bottled sunlight uncapped in a darkened room"
MARK TEPPO

"Alpha and Omega create a sound that is the heaviest dub around. The riddims and melodies at the center combusting in domino fashion, while oscillations and echoes hurtle outward in funnels of sharded noise. Mystical Things is full of new signs: crawling tempos, buzz-sawing bass lines, stormy waves of guitar and melodica, agitated wakes of reverb"
SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN

"This prolific London-based duo is responsible for some of the most convincing dub to come from the first world. Their mix is always dense and claustrophobic, but in a good way - the bass and drums cut through the smoke with melodic precision and the supporting parts waft through the mix like cumulus clouds and desert wind. Highly recommended"
ALL - MUSIC GUIDE

"Talking about roots and culture, ALPHA & OMEGA have come back, more mystical than ever on Mystical things, discover with pleasure Christine's sensual and swinging bass game and as usual John is handling the rhythmics and effects at the same time. Massive & large!!
HYPERTUNEZ

"The UK-based Alpha & Omega have been at the forefront of the genre since entering the scene in 1990, chilling heads with both their original platters and remixes for other electronic artists. Their latest and first with BSI Mystical Things, sees them playing with noise and distorting vocals to create an overall picture of the politics on the inside and outside of humanity"

It's a different pleasure than your ears may be used to, but you'll soon find yourself obsessed with every click, every bleep, every bloop, listening again and again to discover new levels of aural communication that you may not have witnessed previously. It's another triumphant gift from BSI, blessing the eardrums of those longing to save their stereos from damnation"
JAMIE S. RICH ROCKET MAGAZINE

"Alpha and Omega mix dub, ambient sound, an unusual vocal style and a trance-chant sound to forge an identifiable sound on a series of well-received releases. A&O cover the universe in an austere yet elegant manner from first to last with hypnotic, throbbing, ghostly stops along the way"
THE BEAT MAGAZINE

"There was, for this listener, a humorous side to A&O as well...Our guess is that recordings as special as this are few and far between"
RAGING CONSCIOUSNESS

"Who would have thought that? The old Greeks already used turntables. As the cover artwork from "Trample The Eagle And The Dragon And The Bear" proves, no one else than the great Sokrates, Plato and Aristotle invented the turntable. The original stone mosaic shows the custom-made machine which always caused discussions between Sokrates and his wife Xanthippe. She always complained about the "snake" which actually is a microphone as archaelogists later found out.

"Trample The Eagle And The Dragon And The Bear" makes me really pensive because I wonder what the title means. Why have these poor animals to be trampled. Trampled down maybe? Or is Trample the name of the Eagle. It sounds like a nice name to me. Anyway, I think they only want to irk the critics because they have to write down such a long title like "Trample The Eagle And The Dragon And The Bear".

But seriously. I am happy to see a full vinyl album with a real cover. It is so much nicer than a 10". And here, we have a full 22 minutes per side. It seems that they put all their energy in finding a long title like "Trample The Eagle And The Dragon And The Bear" and then were too exhausted to take off the last two track names from the vinyl cover. ;-)

But I know how the other 14 tracks sound. And you know what? I won't tell you! No, you read right. I won't tell a word because you have to hear by yourself. It's your own fault if you miss this brillant album. Alpha & Omega simply rule. Fully heartcore UK dub style without a compromise. Every measure and every bass drum hit is a boom boom boom.

For me, this sets high standard for the year 2005. All other releases will have a tough stand against this dub masterpiece. Sokrates would have been proud to play this LP on his home stereo.

P. S. Please check "Selassie I" featuring Reuben Master. Turn on the volume and bass as much as possible. This is IT. Everything that I am praising here on my website since 1998, put in one song!!!!!"
